United Kingdom Casino Pages
Please note that I have not been able to update the website for some time, but updates will be coming over the next couple of months, so remember to check back!!!
The following pages contain details of casinos operating in the United Kingdom and the chips they use.If you find any mistakes or can add to the information then please email me. I have now added a section detailing all recent updates to the website.
A listing of all U.K. casinos currently open along with details of closed casinos where known. Any information on other closed casinos which I can add to this list will be very welcome. Click on each individual casino to see further information along with details and scans of chips used in those casinos. I have also seperated the casinos into lists for open casinos if you just want to search for casinos currently operating. I have also listed a page for casino groups which have operated in the UK, along with contact details for those still operating. There is also a separate page with sample chips from UK manufacturers.
If you're a visitor from outside the U.K. visiting a casino here for the first time then you will find some differences to casinos in other countries, notably the membership laws. Click here for information about gaming in the U.K. Some casinos in the U.K. issue rule books to their new customers. These are the pages from the Waterfront Casino rule book. The casino is now closed, but this offers an interesting insight into gaming in the U.K.
Although they are now closed, the Playboy Casinos were probably some of the most well known in the UK. Although the 5 casinos all closed in the early 1980's, they are a very popular area for collectors. This is a brief history of the Playboy casinos in the U.K. (written by Playboy Casino expert Tom Stroh).
Another area of collecting, especially in the USA, is Millennium commemorative chips, although so far only 7 are known to have been issued by UK casinos (including 2 £1 Grosvenor tokens recently added to this website).
To see examples of the chips used in U.K. casinos, go to the U.K. casinos lists and then click on the individual casino. Some casino operators use chips with the operator name on them rather than chips specific to a particular casino and in those cases the link will take you to the generic chips used by that operator.
There are however a number of chips which appear to be from the U.K. (often as a result of the denomination on the chips) but which have not been positively identified. These unidentified chips are listed here and any information about these chips will be gratefully received.
I am always keen to acquire any chips from U.K. casinos which I do not have in my collection, which basically means any chips which are not listed in the casino pages. However, I am particularly keen to acquire chips from the following casinos : my chip wants list
My chip trade list has details of chips that I have available to trade, from both U.K. and overseas (mostly USA) casinos.
I also occasionally sell chips on Ebay and Jackpot Auctions (which is dedicated to auctions of casino items, mostly chips). Check for my chips for sale on Ebay and also chips for sale on Jackpot Auctions
Most of the scans in this website are of chips in my personal collection, but there are some of chips which other people have kindly supplied and credit is given for these where applicable. If anyone has scans of other U.K. chips which are not shown, I would love to include them and will give full credit for any used
Other items of memorabilia from U.K. casinos can be very difficult to come across, especially from closed casinos, but it does all exist if you look hard enough! The easiest items to find are pens and matchbooks. You can come across ashtrays occasionally as well. I hope to have some scans of pens and ashtrays here soon. There are no slot cards in the U.K. as there are in the USA, and only a couple of casinos use any method of tracking play on the tables. However because of the U.K. casino membership laws, most casinos issue membership cards although these can be very difficult to obtain other than actually applying for membership as people need to keep their cards in order to get into their casino! Playing cards are also occasionally available, but are generall difficult to find.
The Casino Chip and Gaming Token Collectors Club is a club dedicated to collectors of casino memorabilia based in the USA, but with a large international membership which currently totals several thousand members. Their website contains a vast amount of information and a message board and is well worth the annual subscription of $35 (less for US members) which includes a quarterly magazine.
